A Historical Biopic film of Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy, the freedom fighter from South India set to release in theatres on Gandhi Jayanthi in the coming month. Many Prominent indian newsletters have provided reviews about this film and have questioned the accuracy of the story about Narasimha Reddy stating that his struggle and sacrifice wasn't anything about nationalism but a selfish motive against removal of polygar rights and privileges by the British. This is clearly a poor assessment and it disregards the sacrifice of many who have laid their lives for the cause of freedom for our motherland. We believe that those who wrote this review have a poor understanding of the freedom struggle and its significance. One such article goes on to state that the notion of Bharat Mata only came about in 1875 and because Narasimha Reddy's rebellion took place in 1846 (almost 30 years ago) this has got nothing to do with patriotism. This is infact a foolish statement.Freedom fighting is not about fighting for identities such 'India' or 'Bharat Mata'. The freedom from Britishers was from opression, poverty, social and economic freedom , religious secularism, democracy etc . Infact freedom fighters could have no way understood how the country would turnout after they have got independence. As an example we can take the rebellion of 1857 which is regarded by many as the first struggle for independence in our country. The Hindu and Muslim Sepoys did not rebel for 'Bharat' or 'Bharat Mata'. Their upraisal was against cultural opperssion by the British . Even so, This rebellion was to be a major stepping stone to an elaborate struggle for freedom from the britishers. The Indian freedom struggle had many factors and reasons. All thoses factors and reasons contributed to the struggle which has resulted in the rights and freedoms that we enjoy today. Narasimha Reddy and many other kings and rulers such as Bahadur Shah Zafar,Tipu Sultan, Veera Pandia Kattaboman, Velu Nachiyar, Jhansi Rani Lakshmibhai who fought against the British rule and sacrificed themselves for the cause should be respected and recognised. We as people of this country owe it to them.
